Welcome, First Responders!
Thank you for selecting New Mexico Tech (NMT) for your training and, also, for your dedicated service to your community and to our country.
You will be receiving excellent First Responder training at NMT, and we want to ensure that your visit to our community is also first rate. The Socorro area has over 30 restaurants, including local New Mexican cuisine, gourmet hamburgers, wood-fired oven pizzas, and many national fast food restaurants. Many of our restaurants and bars also serve a wide selection of wines, beers, and other alcoholic beverages. For your safety, please use a designated driver. See a listing of some of our fine eating establishments here (design team, please link to our member restaurants and bars).
The NMT University has a championship 18-hole golf course. Afternoon rates are as low as $15 for 9 holes, including a cart. Bring your personal clubs or rent clubs for only $5.
The internationally renowned Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge is only 20 miles from Socorro. Visitors from all over the world visit the Refuge, especially during the fall and winter months, to see tens of thousands of Sandhill Cranes, geese, and ducks. Bring your binoculars and cameras to observe over 300 western bird species.
The Socorro area also has public lands that are open to hike and bike. There are millions of acres of US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management lands available for you to explore on foot, so consider bringing your hiking boots.
The Very Large Array (VLA), one of the world's premier astronomical radio observatories, consists of 27 radio antennas in a Y-shaped configuration on the Plains of San Agustin, fifty miles west of Socorro. The VLA hosts guided tours on the first Saturday of every month. Call 575-835-7243 for more information.
Socorro has many social and entertainment events throughout the year. Please check this website's Announcements page, the calendar of events on the City of Socorro website at and the Chamber's Facebook page to learn about events occurring during your visit.
We want to help in any way we can to make your training visit more enjoyable. If you’d like to have information about our community, a City of Socorro road map, a Discover Socorro Visitor booklet, or a Socorro calendar of events mailed to you, please contact the Socorro County Chamber of Commerce at 575-835-0424. Many maps and brochures for the area are also available online.
