Socorro County Overview
Socorro County is second largest county in the State of New Mexico in terms of land area. The County seat is the City of Socorro, which is also the largest City and retail base for the County. The Village of Magdalena is the other incorporated community, located west of Socorro. The County also has a chapter of the Navajo Nation located within its boundaries. The Alamo Chapter of the Navajo Nation is located approximately 57 miles to the northwest of the City of Socorro.
Economic Development in Socorro County
Scientific research and technology (largely at New Mexico Tech), defense programs, agriculture, education, and tourism (arts, culture, history) are the backbones of Socorro County’s present-day economy. The Bosque del Apache’s Festival of the Cranes brings many visitors to our county and both the Bosque and Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge contribute funds to our economy each year.
